Program:
Using a case study, the panelists will explore IP protection strategies adopted by Google/Nest to protect key aspects of a well-known Google/Nest smart home product with an eye to preventing copying and enabling licensing opportunities.

Panel:
Bradley Riel, IP Counsel, Google
Brad, as IP counsel, manages patent prosecution, licensing, acquisition and other related activities for Google. He was patent counsel previously at Nest Labs, a Google/Alphabet company where he managed its patent prosecution, licensing ad acquisition for Nest’s preeminent Internet-of-Thigs patent portfolio, including integrating and coordinating the Nest IP program with broader Google/Alphabet initiatives.  He has held law firm positions in the U.S., Japan and England, where he performed IP prosecution and litigation support for a wide variety of companies.

Douglas Crisman, Partner, Morgan Lewis & Bockius, LLC
Doug brings the perspective of a software designer and intellectual property director for a leading computer hardware company to his patent law practice at Morgan Lewis, which includes patent preparation, licensing, and prelitigation opinions, as well as IP transactions, due diligence, and counseling. He routinely works with standards-setting bodies and consortia on IP issues, and provides advice on strategic IP management and open source legal issues ranging from software development to code review and licensing.

Moderator: Andrew J. Gray IV, Partner, Morgan Lewis & Bockius, LLC
Andrew serves as the leader of the firm’s semiconductor practice and as a member of the fintech and technology practices.  He concentrates his practice on intellectual property (IP) litigation and prosecution and on strategic IP counseling. Andrew advises both established companies and startups on Blockchain, cryptocurrency, computer, and Internet law issues, financing and transactional matters that involve technology firms, and the sale and licensing of technology. He represents clients in patent, trademark, copyright, and trade secret cases before state and federal trial and appellate courts throughout the United States, before the US Patent and Trademark Office’s Patent Trial and Appeal Board, and before the US International Trade Commission.
